How to Test Your Sump Pump (Before the Next Big Storm)

Your sump pump sits in a pit doing nothing until water arrives. That's how it should work. The problem: if the pump dies during the dry months, you won't know until water is already coming in.

The 2-minute test

  1. Find your sump pit (basement or crawlspace, often near the foundation wall)
  2. Lift the lid
  3. Pour 5 gallons of water into the pit
  4. Watch: the float should rise, the pump should kick on, water should pump out, the pump should shut off when the pit is empty

What to watch for

Battery backup check

If you have a battery backup, unplug the primary pump and run the test again. The backup should activate. Battery backups need their batteries replaced every 3-5 years.

Service intervals

Test every 3-4 months. Replace the primary pump every 7-10 years even if it's still working — they fail without warning.
